Barrie Adsett (New Zealand)
I have been Adventure Racing since 2002. I have done more than a dozen triathlons from 1999-2002, competed in various ultra marathons from 1999-2006 and completed over 40 marathons since 1998.

As far as AR goes, I don’t really remember what races I have done, but I generally race every month and would estimate I have completed more than 60 races. I’ve competed mostly in 8, 12 and 24 hour events in Southern California, Arizona, Nevada and Baja, Mexico. I am not super-strong in any of the AR disciplines of kayaking, running or mountain biking, but am competent in all of them. My AR strength would be navigation and the ability to read “clues” on the map to assist with course selection while racing.

In 2003 I began writing small “training” events and these free races have become a staple in the San Diego region. Along with fellow team mates, we now put on 2-4 events a year in California and Mexico. These free races pull in from 60-80 people per race and are designed to help people enter the sport. We teach navigation, and explain the concept and stages of an Adventure Race.

In 2007 I completed two Expedition length (300 miles or greater) races in Mexico and Michigan. These were 5-day non-stop races for our team.

Along with my teammates I am active in the Southern California AR community as a competitor, race director/course planner and as a mentor.
