2010 12-Hour Race - Saturday November 6

RESULTS

Congratulations to all who participated in the Equinox 12-Hour Adventure. With a smirk I am saying “sorry I never told you much about the hike-a-bike”. But, let’s face it, if I could have explained how tough it would be, would you have raced? We did tell you it would be tough. This is part of the Adventure, something you cuss about when you are doing it, and for a short while afterwards, but then something which becomes a great story and major accomplishment when you reflect upon it.

The better stories are actually told by the later teams who came through there in the dark and were escorted out by the Border Patrol ATV riders.

There are also stories about the dog who almost attacked Lucy (I say almost because I understand it was short of actually biting her leg – because she jumped off and used her front wheel as a shield – I guess that really is an attack, but it never drew blood). Then the idiot-owner who threatened to shoot Nigel when Nigel yelled to leash the dog. But I will let them tell the story in the first person, rather than my spreading rumors. Read the report Lucy writes for her goecache group.

Many of you took spills somewhere along the course (as evidenced by the cuts, scratches and dirt on part of your clothing that does not normally see the ground). We hope you are not too bruised or bashed and will heal quickly.

Perseverance paid off in the results with a 3-way tie on the points scored (28 out of a possible 34). The winner on fastest time was Garret Bean who completed all the bike checkpoints, all the kayak checkpoints, all the hike checkpoints and some of the O course. The team of Magic Clangers, who only raced for the first time in the Mt Laguna Race, were second, and venerable Well Oiled rounded out the podium (though we have no podium).

There was a mix of long time racers with total newbies, and while a 12-hour event is a lot to chew off as a first race, we did not want to discourage anyone so attempted to give them a few extra tips about the race like; “It will take you 3-5 hours to grind up to the antennas”, and “Expect to take an hour or two to walk the 2Km through the dam canyon”.

The results below show the points each team earned. One point for each checkpoint visited, unless you missed a mandatory checkpoint in which case two optional checkpoints counted as 1 point to “cover” the missed mandatory checkpoint. If you completed only the bike section you missed the 4 mandatory hike checkpoints so the additional 6 optional bike checkpoints only counted as 3 points.
